Coaching is a conversation between the coach and the client, to generate new thinking and learning towards action thereby maximising personal and professional potential.

Brain-based coaching

Brain-based coaching is a coaching approach based in contemporary neuro science, applying the latest on how the brain works to create a more powerful, positive and transformational changes for the coachee. In short, Brain-based coaching is defined as: ‘facilitating positive change by first improving the thinking’ – Dan Beverly

This can be applied to all the conversations on leadership and management issues, to name a few

  • Conflict management
  • Decision making
  • Team development and management
  • Change management
  • Habit formation

A good understanding of neuroscience helps in understanding the fundamental functions of the brain while the above issues occur and see how the brain can be better tuned to address these issues. It also facilitates a more purposeful conversation with the client and a better appreciation of the need and ways to change for the client.

Case Studies

Objective

Presently managing teams. Want to build a high performance team. How to juggle between people management and client goals

Coaching approach:

Asked the client his definition of high performance teams. The aspects of high performance teams are trust, collaboration, passionate, motivated.

Worked on Johari window with the client to get a better understanding of various perspectives.
In the conversation, worked on each of the aspects mentioned above and worked on action items for developing each aspect.

Outcome:

After 3 months the team performance had improved beyond expectations on all the aspects of high performance team

Objective

Client wanted to create an impactful presence in his communication with seniors and his clients.

Coaching approach:

Asked the client to detail out his understanding and expectation of impactful presence. Aspects mentioned by the client were clarity of thought, clarity of communication, simple and concise, have discipline and energy. Client had gone through a DISC assessment and had his DISC profile report.

Through the coching conversation, we looked at ways by which the client could identify the behaviour/style of the person with whom he is communicating, understand the expectations of that style and then adapt the style to the style of the receiver. From a neuroscience perspective, the client understood how the brain could be trained to change patterns and thereby facilitate change of behaviour. The concepts of neuroplasticity, fundamental philosophy of the brain of threat and reward, expectations and experience in creating dynamic stability were discussed and this helped the client to create and impactful presence in his communication.

Outcome:

After 3 months the client had got this as a habit and was able to tune his communication to the expectations of the audience thereby creating and impactful presence.

Objective

Client wanted to improve on his networking skills. He has anxiety when he tries to connect with people unknown to him.

Coaching approach:

Asked the client about the importance of networking inline with the role that he was playing and the levels of anxiety that he was going through. He had gone through a DISC assessment and had his DISC profile report. Through the coaching conversation, we looked at ways by which the client could use the strengths of this DISC profile and improve the networking skills. This client had high scores in C and S. So one of ways discussed was to look at people with same styles and see he can strike a conversation with them. From a neuroscience perspective, there is always a discomfort or a threat is the brain gets used to interacting with unknown people. If that could be perceived as a reward, by changing the thinking to the gains from the interaction, the threat is lesser. This would reduce the anxiety that the client is presently experiencing.

Outcome:

After a month of practice, the client could connect easily with people with same styles and the anxiety levels were much less. Client has now started to connect with people with different DISC styles where the anxiety levels are much higher as of now.
